Welcome to our October newsletter of Rotary Year 2025/26
President's Note
I can't believe that October is almost at an end already! It's been a busy month and we are moving ahead with lots of projects in the Club.
We're talking about our spending plans and looking closely at the charities we want to help, and of course, we are working on our fundraising projects, to make sure we replace the money we spend so we can keep the good flowing!
One of our main focuses is on membership and how we get the word of Rotary out there, to explain what we do, as sometimes Rotary can still be misunderstood, if you can believe that! We are on a mission to change that and I'll touch on that below!
Please do feel free to contact me directly or to get in touch with any of our members, who can tell you more about the club, the benefits of being a member, the opportunities that await you as a member of Rotary International, and let's not forget the fun and friendship that comes along with it!
Save The Dragonboat Date!
Now Confirmed!
We now have confirmation from the Harbourmaster's office for our Dragonboat Festival 2026.
The date will be Sunday 28th June 2026!
Remember this will be our 25th Anniversary Dragonboat and we are looking forward to a full programme and to celebrate the event in style! Come and celebrate with us....enter a team, volunteer to help on the day, or even just come along and soak up the atmosphere. Please do get in touch if you want to know more and we look forward to seeing you there!
2025 Dragonboat Prizegiving
We enjoyed a fun Dragonboat Prizegiving on 8th October, and had a full house at breakfast that day, with many of our members, some of the Dragonboat team members, and some special guests.
We were honoured to welcome the Lord Mayor, as well as Bristol's Lord Lieutenant, Peaches Golding and our Rotary District Governor, Anne Bartholomew, amongst other special guests.
We are grateful for the support that we have for our Dragonboat festival from so many people and this helps us raise as much money as possible for so many deserving causes.
The charities that we chose as this year's beneficiaries are Lifeskills Learning for Living, the Hartcliffe & Withywood Community Partnership and Unseen UK.
We are already working on next year, to make it even bigger and better!
Membership Initiatives
Membership is important to our club, as well as many others. We want to sustain our current membership and grow so we can welcome the Rotarians of the future.
Many people think Rotary is only for retired professionals, but it's so much more than that. I myself run a business and have other interests outside of my business. There are other members who are in the same position and who have busy lives and families too.
One of our members, John Betty, in partnership with our Membership Lead, Tony Hughes, have launched a new initiative for us to connect with businesses and the corporate sector, to introduce Rotary and to share ideas and plans so that we can collaborate for the common good.
Many companies have social responsibility goals and charity budgets to spend and sometimes it can be confusing to navigate the many good causes and to connect with the right ones that align with the values of the company and the goals they have for their funds or the activities they want to expose their staff to.
Rotary can be a fantastic link to connect the two. A conduit for good. And at the same time, as we help those companies get their staff involved in projects or fundraising initiatives, more people are introduced to Rotary, their knowledge is enhanced, they meet more like minded people and this can give them an outlet for their charitable endeavours and so much more. And this is turn creates succession for the membership of Rotary.
Everybody wins!
There is nothing like helping others to create a feeling of good and purposeful work. All we need is a little time.
No matter how busy we are, it is my firm belief that each and every person has just a little time.

Disaster Relief from Rotary
We do lots for our local area and we're always very proud of that, but sometimes we don't talk much about what we do further afield.
Our International Committee work extremely hard on many projects across the world, to help the power of Rotary spread far and wide.
One of the things we do is to respond to other countries across the world when they have suffered from things such as war or natural disasters.
This month, we managed to find £500 from our tight budget to send some funds to
At the time of writing we are learning about Hurricane Melissa, which has devastated parts of Jamaica and the surrounding area and is described as one of the strongest hurricanes ever to have been recorded. We await news from our fellow Rotarians in that part of the world, and if we can help, we most certainly will.
~~~ In Memoriam ~~~
We were shocked and saddened this month by the sudden and unexpected passing of one of our long standing and most active members, Mary Whittington.
Mary inspired us and supported us, having a positive impact on our members and our club over many years, and epitomised what a Rotarian should be, being an example to us all. She will be sadly missed for a long time to come.
Our heartfelt condolences are with Bob and the family at this time.
